A breast pump can serve several important functions: it can be used to extract milk from the breasts while the mother is at work, to increase the amount of milk available in the breasts or to remove milk when the breasts become too full.

The best breast pump is a double electric breast pump. This type of pump allows the mother to pump both breasts at the same time. It is important to choose an electric pump because battery-powered pumps are not strong enough and manual pumps can cause repetitive stress injuries to the hands.

Another idea is to buy a gift basket filled with bath or beauty products such as scented oil, skin care cream or a manicure kit. You may not think that this would be appropriate for a baby shower, but most expectant moms start to feel somewhat un-pretty by the end of the pregnancy and a collection of items allowing her to pamper herself might be just what she needs.

For the baby, one good idea is to purchase a baby bath tub and fill it with basic baby supplies such as baby powder, baby shampoo and baby oil. These are things that will all be needed when the baby comes, and it won’t cost a lot to put this gift together if you’re on a budget.

For something a little more memorable, a diaper cake is a great choice. If you have never seen a diaper cake, picture a wedding cake made by rolling diapers together to form the layers. Once you have each layer completed, secure it with a rubber band and tie a ribbon around each layer. Use a baby item to top it off and you’ve got a beautiful and practical baby gift.

These gifts are sure to please the expectant mother. Whether you choose a new breast pump to help her breastfeed successfully or a basket of goodies to pamper her, or go with a gift for the baby, your friend will be thrilled that you thought of her and were there to support her and help her celebrate the birth of her new baby.
