When buying bedding for their babies, most parents will tend to pay real attention to the comfort side and most importantly the safety aspect.  Whilst we applaud this kind of approach, there is also a third area to take into consideration.  Here we look at how making the right choices in your baby’s bed linen can help assist in their development.

Visual development and stimulation

Research in the last few years has shown that the visual development of babies is assisted by regular stimulation.  This stimulation can be provided in the form of stirring designs and patterns.  The advanced eyes of an adult can make out millions shades of colour and light.  In comparison a baby’s eyes can only detect significant contrasts between light or dark, or black and white.  Therefore designs like a chequered grid or swirly lines offer babies great stimulation.

Taking the theory into the nursery

Choosing bedding for the nursery with patterns on it means that your baby will be visually stimulated for the long periods that they spend in their cot.  Black and white are the most obvious colours to use, but you can also go for other colours as long as they offer a good contrast to each other.

Different strokes

Buying a few different bedding sets with varying designs that you can change frequently is a good idea.  Rotation means that you child will not become bored with the same old pattern and will continue to enjoy looking at the bedding and thus develop further.

Taking things further

In addition to introducing these kinds of patterns to your baby’s bedding, you should also look to add them to other areas where they spend time.  Some suggestions are; in front of your car’s baby seat, on the bottom of their mobile and on the bathroom wall.
