About Baby Language

With Christmas round the corner, it’s never too early to start looking around for presents for your friends and loved ones. This time however, I have the added joy of selecting a present for my little niece who will be celebrating her very first Christmas this year. Excited as i was, I couldn’t help thinking no matter what I gave, she wouldn’t care or understand; but then again;  she would one day and i wanted it to be something that would bring back memories of her first Christmas when she is old enough to understand.

What to give my niece for her  first Christmas was becoming quite a problem for me. Toys were the obvious answer; but then toys get broken pretty soon and they are definitely not what memories are made of. She had all the main necessities such as a pram, a cute crib as well as hordes of clothes which she had got as gifts and those that had been bought for her by her parents. I generally never liked giving what are usually called ‘useful things” as gifts because I remember how I myself hated so called useful gifts which were never fun when you are a kid. After all, who can get excited over boring old socks or sleep suits as nice as they are. Then I saw this cute ‘message Teddy” with the name of the baby on the jumper and decided to keep it in mind if I couldn’t get anything more exciting.

But wait a minute, there was another Teddy gift and this looked even better. It was a Teddy design set of cutlery consisting of knife, fork and spoon which the salesman was quick to point out could be engraved with baby’s name. Definitely a keepsake was my thought and she could also have lots of fun with it at mealtimes. I decided to look around some more and came across some delightful baby gifts that were sure to be appreciated by the new mom and dad as well as baby when she was big enough. Another unusual and very original gift was a beautifully embellished Christmas Star with baby’s name and year engraved on it. This was sure to be a hit and is something that can be used year after year and be one of those things both parents and baby will treasure always.  

Some other very appropriate gifts I came across for baby’s first Christmas were CD’s of songs with baby’s name sung where ever suitable and stories read out using baby’s name. These were all gifts that could be custom ordered and personalized according to your wish as was the cute calendar I saw that had a photo of a baby for every month where you get your baby’s name printed across the photo. 

What lovely gifts children get today I thought, my memories going back to the time I was a kid myself and had to be content   with much less in the way of gifts, but in no way lacking in love and laughter our house was always filled with. Isn’t that what all children need even more than toys and gifts? The love of parents can compensate for many things and any little baby who is loved whole heartedly will have the best gift of all and that is what will live in her memory more than any gift that is bought from the store.Doc.
