Baby Bedding - A Guide For Buyers

12th July 2010 by Babies No Comments

The first item of baby bedding that you need to buy is the crib itself. You need to make sure that is an appropriate size for your baby, that it does not have any sharp or rough edges, and that the bars on it are a sensible distance apart. It should also have a firm base and not be easy to rock, as once your baby grows a bit it will inevitably start bouncing around and pulling and pushing whatever it can get it’s hands on. To prevent your baby banging themselves against the sides of the crib you will need some bumpers. Some people think that only one is needed for the end of the crib where the baby’s head is, but you really need four - one for each side. This is because your baby will wave their arms and legs about and may well turn themselves around whilst they are sleeping. The blankets that you use should be appropriate your home’s temperature. If you buy polyester blankets you may find that they make your baby too warm. Likewise, you may find that acrylic cellular blankets are not a good choice. Cotton is the best choice of materials for baby blankets. As a general guide, a warm room (approximately 75 degrees) will require one sheet. Then, for every drop of 5 degrees, you should add another baby blanket. It is advisable to only buy machine washable baby bedding because all items will need to be washed at least every other day. For that reason, you will also need to make sure that you buy at least two sets of bedding, so you will always have some available whilst one set is being washed or is drying. When washing items, avoid using cheap brands of washing powder as the chemicals used in it can irritate the skin of some babies.
